Het sfeervolle Pietermaai
De handelskade in Punda is wereldberoemd maar Pietermaai is eigenlijk veel leuker. Het is een karakteristieke wijk die na jaren van verval weer langzaam in ere hersteld wordt. Met name door de vestiging van enkele gerenommeerde restaurants en uitgaansgelegenheden is Pietermaai voor zowel locals als toeristen weer een populaire plek om uit te gaan. Begin je ontdekkingstocht vanaf de Theaterstraat en loop vervolgens door naar de Nieuwestraat. In deze straat liggen gezellige locaties naast elkaar en bieden goede entertainment voor een avondje uit. Parallel aan de Nieuwestraat ligt de Penstraat. Naast leuke bars en hotels kun je ook prachtige architectuur vinden in deze straat, die direct langs de rotskust ligt.

In deze oude markthal kun je rond lunchtijd heerlijke typisch Curacaose gerechten eten. En dat voor een zeer schappelijke prijs. Veel inwoners van Willemstad weten deze plek te waarderen en ook steeds meer toeristen nemen er een kijkje. Wat mij betreft is dat absoluut terecht!

Slavernij Museum
Dit antropologisch museum in de wijk Otrobanda richt zich voornamelijk op de oorsprong van de mens, de Afrikaanse slavenhandel, goud en Antilliaanse kunst. Het is ook mogelijk om met een gids door het museum te gaan. Je wordt er niet per se vrolijk van, maar je komt wel veel te weten over de Nederlandse historie en die van het eiland.
This anthropological museum in the Otrobanda district focuses mainly on the origin of man, the African slave trade, gold and Antillean art. It is possible to go through the museum with a guide. De Mikvé Israël-Emanuelsynagoge
In Willemstad is de oudste nog in gebruik zijnde synagoge op het Amerikaanse continent. De houten synagoge uit 1732, ook bekend als de Snoa, is een belangrijke toeristische bezienswaardigheid in Curaçao.

Currently under restoration Kura Hulanda is a unique neighborhood formerly operating as ‘Hotel Kura Hulanda’.
The cobblestone pathways wind through the meticulously 18th and 19th century Dutch Colonial Caribbean buildings around several glorious courtyards. The name derives from Papiamentu,Curacao's native tongue, and means ‘Dutch courtyard’.

Fort Beekenburg In Curacao
The Fort stands as an imposing monument on a high rocky cliff at the south end of the Island. It was built in the 1700's and was used to repel invaders who attempted to land in Caracas Bay from the seaward side. Access is free and you can take time to explore this now abandoned fortress. Climb up to the very top where you will find the original old cannons and also have great views over the land and ocean. The climb is fairly strenuous with stairs and ladders and may not be suitable for all.

Het werd gebouwd in de jaren 1700 en werd gebruikt om indringers af te weren die vanaf de zeezijde probeerden te landen in de Caracasbaai. Curaçao Rif Mangrove Park
Dit is een bijzonder stadspark op Curaçao dat bestaat uit mangrovebomen. Maak een wandeling over de loopbrug over het water door het mangrovebos.Ga je liever kajakken? Dan ontdek je het park van een hele andere kant. Samen met een ranger kajak je door de mangroves en geniet je vanaf het water van alle flora en fauna.
Je vindt het Curaçao Rif Mangrove Park in Otrobanda, tegenover de cruise terminal. Aangekomen bij het park loop je eerst langs de ticket office. Hier kies je of je zelf wilt rondlopen of graag met een ranger een tour door het park doet. Vervolgens openen ze het hek en kan je het park al wandelend of vanuit de kajak gaan ontdekken.

Het bijzondere Christoffel park mag je niet missen!
Het Christoffelpark, is het grootste natuurpark van Curaçao. Er leven verschillende zeldzame planten en dieren zoals witstaartherten en bijzondere wilde orchideeën. Naast de verharde autowegen zijn er maar liefst 8 verschillende wandelroutes. Voor bezoekers die graag wat meer informatie willen krijgen over de natuur, en niet zelf willen rijden is er de mogelijkheid om mee te gaan met een pickup safari onder leiding van een parkranger.

De route begint enigszins rustig en zeker niet steil, maar loop niet te hard van stapel; al snel zal je merken dat het steiler en steiler wordt. Op sommige plekken is wandelen misschien niet eens meer het goede woord en past klauteren beter. Zeker bij het laatste stukje. Maar dan word je daarna wel beloond op een indrukwekkend uitzicht… Bij helder en onbewolkt weer kan je zelfs Bonaire zien liggen!

Hofi Pastor
In het dorpje Barber ligt het kleine natuurpark, Hofi Pastor,
Zodra je het parkje in wandelt, merk je meteen dat je op een bijzonder plekje bent aangekomen. Aan het begin van het park staat een klein huisje, waar je even aan een belletje moet trekken.
Dan komt er een parkwachter aan, aan wie je een paar Antilliaanse gulden moet betalen als toegangsgeld. Daar krijg je veel voor terug!
De oorspronkelijke, nette boomgaard is verwilderd tot een sprookjesachtig bos. Je hebt zelfs kans dat een voetpad lastig begaanbaar is door overhangende lianen of omgevallen bomen. Dat maakt het des te leuker! Tussen het oerwoud van lianen en indrukwekkende bomen is het heerlijk koel. Je ziet de mooiste vogels wegschieten, overal vliegen vlinders en met een beetje geluk zie je grote leguanen, wilde ezels of kleurrijke maar ongevaarlijke slangen. Je kunt kiezen tussen twee routes, de rode of de gele maar welke wandeling je ook kiest, om één boom kun je nooit heen! Beide routes beginnen namelijk bij de oudste boom van Curaçao. Dat is een magistrale kapokboom die honderden jaren oud is. Hij ziet er werkelijk fantastisch uit. De bast van de boom lijkt bijna dierlijk en de wortels steken een meter hoog uit de grond. Ze hebben een straal van minstens tien meter rondom de boom.
Entree is een paar gulden en op vrijdag is het gesloten.

The original, neat orchard has turned into a fairytale forest. There is even a chance that a footpath is difficult to access due to overhanging lianas or fallen trees. That makes it all the more fun! It is wonderfully cool between the jungle of lianas and impressive trees. You will see the most beautiful birds, butterflies are flying everywhere and with a bit of luck you will see large iguanas, wild donkeys or colorful but harmless snakes. You can choose between two routes, the red or the yellow, but whichever walk you choose, you can never go around one tree! Both routes start at the oldest tree of Curaçao. That is a magisterial kapok tree that is hundreds of years old. He really looks fantastic. The bark of the tree looks almost animalistic and the roots stick out a meter high from the ground. They have a radius of at least ten meters around the tree.
Admission is a few guilders and it is closed on Fridays.
Shete boca
(zeven baaien) Beslaat ongeveer 10 km aan ruige kust met diverse inhammen. Deze bezienswaardigheid is een zeer geliefde plek van menige natuurliefhebber.

Playa Piskado
Piskado is een vissershaventje. Omdat de vissen vanaf de boot gelijk schoongemaakt worden en het afval in zee gegooid wordt, zijn er altijd heel veel zeeschildpadden aanwezig. Daarom is het geweldig om daar te snorkelen! Er zijn altijd schildpadden te zien vooral rond de stijger.

Piskado is a fishing port. Because the fish are immediately cleaned from the boat and the waste is thrown into the sea, there are always a lot of sea turtles present. That's why it's great to snorkel there! There are always turtles to be seen especially around the jetty.

This nature park is not very well known but definitely worth a visit.
It is a cove on the north side of the island. If you look down you can see the large turtles swimming that come to eat seaweed.

Het is een inham aan de noordkant van het eiland. Als je naar beneden kijkt kun je de grote schildpadden zien zwemmen die daar zeewier komen eten.

Flamingo`s bij St Willibrordus.
Prachtige plek om de flamingo’s in hun natuurlijke omgeving te zien. Je kunt je auto langs de weg zetten en een stukje het moeras in lopen zodat heel dichtbij kunt komen.

De Hato grotten bieden veel geschiedenis op een oppervlakte van ongeveer 4900 m² met druipsteengrotten en waterpartijen. De vage muurschilderingen, waarvan sommige wel 1500 jaar oud zijn, stammen uit de tijd dat er indianen woonden. Later hielden veel slaven zich er schuil. Met een gids zijn veel van deze grotten te bewonderen en hoor je alle verhalen en mythen. Je ziet waarschijnlijk ook wat leguanen en vleermuizen.

Zwemmen met Dolfijnen
Niet goedkoop, maar wel een geweldige belevenis.
Bij het Sea Aqurium heb je de mogelijkheid om met Dolfijnen te zwemmen.
Ik heb zelf niet de indruk dat de dieren geëxploiteerd worden Het is hier totaal anders dan in Nederland. De dolfijnen krijgen alle ruimte en mogen ook vaak "spelen en zwemmen" in open zee. Zij kiezen er dan zelf voor om terug te keren naar hun ruime lagune. De dolfijnen hier worden zelfs ouder dan in het wild.
Swimming with dolphins
Not cheap, but a great experience. At the Sea Aqurium you have the opportunity to swim with dolphins.
I myself do not have the impression that the animals are exploited. It is completely different here than in the Netherlands. The dolphins are given plenty of space and are often allowed to "play and swim" in the open sea. They then choose to return to their spacious lagoon. The dolphins here live even older than in the wild.

En een schitterende snorkel locatie. De stranden zijn van het witste wit en het water is nog blauwer dan de likeur.
Het middelpunt van het eiland is een oude vuurtoren en aan de achterkant van het eiland vind je enkele verroeste scheepswrakken. Een desolate plek, maar wel fotogeniek.
Je kunt dit verborgen plekje als dagtocht bezoeken per boot. Wij hebben dit met de Mermaid gedaan en dat was zeer goed verzorgd inclusief een heerlijke uitgebreide BBQ.
And a beautiful snorkeling location. The beaches are of the whitest white and the water is even bluer than the liqueur.
The centerpiece of the island is an old lighthouse and at the back of the island you will find some rusted shipwrecks. A desolate place, but photogenic.
You can visit this hidden spot as a day trip by boat. We did this with the Mermaid and it was very well taken care of, including a delicious extensive BBQ.
